Introduction

Beloved, the message today is titled “The Prerequisite for a Transformed Church.” As we reflect on the state of the church and our individual roles within it, we will explore what it truly takes to experience transformation—both personally and collectively in the body of Christ.

Our anchor scriptures are:

  • 2 Chronicles 19:4-9
  • 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

These passages emphasize the necessity of repentance, renewal, and responsibility in restoring ourselves and others to God. A transformed church begins with a transformed individual, for God works through individuals to achieve collective change.

God’s Methodology: Revival Begins with One Person

1. Jehoshaphat’s Story (2 Chronicles 19:4)

Jehoshaphat, after being rebuked for forming ungodly alliances, repented and redirected his efforts toward God’s will. His personal conviction led him to travel through Judah, urging the people to return to God. This demonstrates that personal obedience and submission are the foundation of broader spiritual revival.

2. Paul’s Ministry (2 Corinthians 5:11-21)

Paul’s transformation from Saul to Paul began with a dramatic encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus. His new life in Christ compelled him to reconcile others to God.

  • “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • Paul exemplified how abandoning the old self and embracing a renewed identity in Christ are essential for personal and collective transformation.

Steps to Transformation

For the church to experience genuine revival, every believer must undergo these three critical steps:

1. Confrontation

Transformation begins when we face the truth of God’s word.

  • Jehoshaphat was confronted by a prophet, while Paul encountered Jesus directly.
  • Similarly, the Holy Spirit confronts us with areas in our lives that require change.

2. Conviction and Repentance

Confrontation leads to conviction. The Spirit reveals our sins, prompting us to turn away from them.

  • Repentance involves more than an apology; it’s a decisive act of turning from sin and returning to God.
  • “Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; be made new in the attitude of your minds; and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24).

3. Renewal and Transformation

Once the old self is removed, God renews our minds and transforms us.

  • “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2).
  • Renewal equips us to walk in holiness and enables us to influence the church and the world positively.

God’s Strategy: Finding a Vessel

God’s plan for transformation emphasizes the individual. A transformed church requires a person who is fully surrendered to God.

  • Examples in Scripture:
    • Moses led Israel out of Egypt after encountering God at the burning bush (Exodus 3).
    • Elijah stood boldly as God’s prophet against the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18).
    • Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles following his life-changing conversion (Acts 9).

Until God finds a person who is willing to be confronted, convicted, and converted, His work cannot fully manifest.

Practical Application: The Three-Step Process

Paul’s message in Ephesians 4:22-24 outlines a clear three-step process for spiritual transformation:

1. Put Off the Old Self

  • The old self represents sinful habits and behaviors that oppose God’s will.
  • Spiritual circumcision (Colossians 2:11-13) removes the “flesh” and enables us to live fully for God.

2. Renew Your Mind

  • Renewal begins with a transformed mindset. This is achieved by immersing ourselves in God’s word and allowing it to shape our thoughts and actions.

3. Put On the New Self

  • The new self reflects God’s nature in righteousness and holiness.
  • Living as a new creation allows us to serve as instruments of change in our homes, churches, and communities.

Conclusion

The transformation of the church begins with us as individuals. God is looking for vessels who are willing to be confronted, convicted, and renewed for His glory. True transformation leads to peace, purpose, and alignment with God’s will.
